Piramal Enterprises: The company on Thursday in a filing with exchanges said it has completed a fundraising of ₹1,750 crore through preferential allotment of compulsory convertible debentures (CCDs) to Canadian institutional investor Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec (CDPQ). The compulsory conversion of CCDs into equity shares will take place within 18 months from the date of allotment, Piramal Enterprises said.
Bajaj Finance: Non-bank lender Bajaj Finance Ltd on Thursday said that it has invoked shares of Karvy Data Management Services Ltd (KDMSL), which were pledged by Karvy Stock Broking Ltd to raise funds from the lender. Aviation stocks: Ratings agency ICRA expects India’s domestic air passenger growth to be at 4.5% in the current fiscal, the lowest in six years, as issues around Boeing 737 Max and Airbus A320neo hit capacity addition, and due to Indian airlines focus on expanding on the international routes. The weak growth for 2019-20 follows six years of double-digit increase in domestic passenger traffic for the aviation industry, and the weak growth has led ICRA to maintain its year-end negative outlook on the airline industry.
Yes Bank: India Ratings and Research (Ind-Ra) has downgraded YES Bank Ltd’s long-term issuer rating to A from A ‘plus’ and its short-term issuer rating to A1 from A1 ‘plus’, and placed them on Rating Watch Negative (RWN). Delay in capital raising and uncertainty regarding the quantum, lower current account deposits, have been the main reasons that triggered the downgrade, Ind-Ra said.

2019.11.13 19:37 heliogt2 1926 RAF 12 Squadron, Andover and the Fairey Fox- Joe's History of Aviation (my grandfather)

The Fairey Fox looked a lovely machine, clean in outline with many novel features. It had a welded steel tube engine mounting, an innovation on Air Force machines, and an undercarriage consisting of telescopic tubes containing rubber balls. The fuel tank was of duralumin, and three was a system of short-circuiting the water for quick heating. A surface radiator hung under the center-section, and another which could be drawn into the fuselage. The engine was started up with the control cock in such a position that the water circulated only round the water jackets of the motor, and, at the same time, through the oil heater and cooler combined. In this way, the oil was quickly heated, and, when the cooling water was circulating through the radiators, it kept the oil at a proper temperature. They used the new Fairey-Reed metal air screws on the ungeared Curtiss, and the motor was beautifully covered with a streamlined cowling fixed on by the new Fairey cowling button. The installation had no priming system. You pumped fuel to the carburetors, which were between the cylinders, till they flooded and then turned the motor over using the hand turning gear, to which the starter-magneto was engaged.
The job was slowed up a little while the General Strike was settled, but it was not long until I found myself at Northolt aerodrome with the first machine, and, in the month of June, I set off in the back seat of her for Andover aerodrome, piloted by Capt. Macmillan. She was delivered to No. 12 (B) Squadron, squadron leader Salt commanding. It was the Wednesday afternoon half-holiday in the RAF when we arrived, but our climbing turns and roars across the aerodrome soon brought them all out and crowds of service people surrounded us when, at last, Capt. Macmillan brought her down and taxied right into a hangar.
More machines arrived, and the squadron began to get used to them. The mechanics, at first, were prejudiced, talking about “Woolworth’s motors”, “Henry Ford”, and so on, but the motor soon proved itself, needing very little attention and astonishing everyone by its cleanliness. Later the squadron was to tell Rolls-Royce that their new “F” motor would have to be good to compare with the “D.12”.
Even the high-placed ones were a bit skeptical about the “Fox”, which was something entirely new. She had been produced by Mr. Fairey in order to show the Ministry what his idea of a light bomber was, as opposed to the official idea. She was so much faster than the proposed official design that the Ministry were forced to buy. I remember talking with Sir John Steel, then AOC of the Wessex Bombing Area, as we stood watching some “Foxes”. He said that it seemed curious that the Ministry had still to go to America for motors, and he mentioned that there were still many squadrons in the RAF equipped with the Liberty motor, dating from the last war, and told me that they had tried in vain to find a replacement. I believe that the heads were worried about how their young pilots would handle the new machines, and whether they would kill themselves landing, because the new streamlined shape needed a new technique.
In due course 12 squadron began to show the RAF that they could put up something rather good in the way of formation flying. S/L Salt would stand out in front of his lined up machines, give the signal for engaging starting handles, and, after a few turns, and raise his arm as a signal for contact. All motors would start up together.
Twelve months after the first machine was delivered the “Foxes” took part in the Hendon display, and they certainly caused excitement when, after diving in formation, they shrieked across the aerodrome just above the heads of the crowd. I was tickled up the back, as they used to say in Buffalo, and proud of my share in the affair.

2019.10.31 02:44 CitizenProfane What's on the Nov 5 Election Ballot (and some thoughts on candidates)

Please vote if you haven’t already. Here is the election schedule. I talked to someone working at one of the early voting sites and he said that turnout has been slow so far. “Not enough controversy,” he sighed. Don’t let that deter you! Here is my latest recap of candidates for the upcoming election with my opinions as well (disagreement welcome in comments below--I want to hear other opinions to better inform myself.) Quick note: I am in District 7 so I didn’t evaluate the other city council candidates who were not at-large but still running.
Mayoral Candidates
Vi Lyles (incumbent): generally well-respected and known for being “pro Charlotte”; she’s been a civil servant working in the Charlotte government for decades; supported the RNC coming to Charlotte next year. It will be shocking if she doesn’t win as her competition is quite weak.
David Michael Rice: Rice appears with regularity as a candidate for various roles in Charlotte (e.g. County Commissioner, City Council, mayor). He most recently ran for the role of Soil and Conservation District Supervisor in last year’s election. He’s been unsuccessful to date and has said in the past he had religious cable access TV show. He does not seem to be a “viable” opponent (no pun intended). He has also had a number of financial problems (bankrupty filings, liens against his property) dating back many years.
City Council at Large
Dimple Ajmera (incumbent): a young relatively new council member; very liberal, endorsed by the Observer, very passionate in her positions related to women’s equality and economic development.
Julie Eiselt (incumbent): also an experienced council member and is currently the Mayor Pro Tem. According to Charlotte’s city council website, “Julie had never envisioned a role in public office until a man tried to abduct her at gunpoint in 2007. This led to her found Neighbors for a Safer Charlotte, to advocate for court-system resources and policies to make all Charlotte residents safer.” She has a reputation for being respected on the city council.
James (Smuggie) Mitchell (incumbent) current member of the council having served on it for over 10 years; currently the chair of the economic development committee. He received the 2nd highest number of votes in the Democratic primary.
Joshua Richardson: very young (age 21) candidate who describes himself as a Christian conservative. He said in an online survey that the person he looks up to most is Christ. There were a number of typos on his responses to questions with Ballotopedia (e.g. “played lose (sic) with…”. He appears to have no work experience and there was no resume available online. (While he is the only at-large Republican candidate, that does NOT mean that the council is Republican-less. Ed Driggs represents District 7 and is a Republican who is running uncontested so there will absolutely still be a Republican on the council.)
Braxton Winston (incumbent): relatively young and attended Davidson College and the elite New England prep school Phillips Andover; personal note—he was evidently trying to avoid being served divorce papers awhile back; his political career began when he was featured in the media during the Keith LaMott Scott riots and that put him in touch with community organizers; he realized he wanted to be involved in local politics then. His key issues are equity (housing equity, living wages for employees), access (mass transit, digital access), and interconnectedness (helping families particularly affected by the criminal justice system). He received the highest number of votes in the Democratic primary.
City Council District 7
Ed Driggs (incumbent): On his website he claims he wants “small, effective government” and believes that Charlotte has too much red tape for new businesses. Ed did not respond to my email so I am not sure how responsive he is to constituents or if he just didn’t get my emails. He also claims to have coffee every 7am on Fridays at the Ballantyne Hotel but I never saw him there when I went. He has been on the council for 6 years and positions himself as being one of the few Republican voices within the group.
Board of Education
Annette Albright (age 53): Albright was a behavior modification technician at Harding High School and reportedly was assaulted by some students which made the local news. She had filed a lawsuit against CMS for wrongful termination (she believes it was because she filed a worker’s comp claim) around that time and has run unsuccessfully for school board before. She appears to have several degrees in criminal justice. Regarding her platform, she says she wants to replace the Common Core and reduce overcrowding. (I will say as a CMS parent that the Common Core is not a bad thing—ensuring children have consistent education everywhere is a noble goal aspiring to equity. In my experience though, many schools cannot achieve the goals of the Common Core because the bar is high. I’d argue dumbing down our schools is not the answer though.) I’m also concerned that she wants more teachers fluent in the various languages of ESL students. Having had children in a language immersion program, it is very, very difficult to get multilingual teachers certified to teach public elementary school. That is a high bar, unnecessary and not the best use of limited school funds.
Elyse Dashew (age 49, incumbent) Elyse’s children have been in CMS for years and she seems to be in the process of being groomed to be the Chairperson of the CMS board (she is Vice-Chairman now) but she also has been part of a group where transparency is missing. The current board mysteriously let Clayton Wilcox go with no explanation (the same board that presided over his pay raise just a few months prior). This incumbent board has also been light on answers with respect to details regarding school bonds and how it impacts current school programs. And in the school reassignment debate from a few years ago, details were also absent then as well. The board didn’t even shut down fears of parents who worried that their children may be reassigned to Huntersville if they lived in South Charlotte. (I supposed vagaries are best because it gives less ammunition to oppose something.) She opposes vouchers for private schools and was the key leader behind the passing of the $1B school bond from a few years ago. We should demand more transparency from the board. Voting for Elyse probably won’t deliver that transparency.
Jennifer De La Jara (age 45). Jennifer is a first-generation college graduate and wants to ensure “every child has access to quality public education.” She is the director of education at International House and a former ESL teacher in Cabarrus County. Her website states her support of education for “trades and IT” (where relevant in lieu of 4 year college degrees) and more Pre-K support. She has a number of endorsements including the Charlotte Observer and one of my favorite CMS educators, Justin Parmenter. She lives in Davidson now and pledges to support the views of the suburban Charlotte communities to have better access to CMS resources.
Gregory Denlea (age 57). Former University of Phoenix teacher. Father of 3 who attended CMS. He also believes that CMS students face too much standardized testing. In an online survey, he also seemed to be dismayed by the “suburban flight” from CMS. I don’t understand why that is a problem if towns like Huntersville want to secede and become their own districts. His website states that he is particularly adamant about funding in the suburbs of towns like Mint Hill and Matthews (recall that those cities wanted to have their own magnets prioritizing residents which would be funded by Charlotte residents overall.) By my calculation, Huntersville, Matthews and Mint Hill have 13% of Charlotte’s population but likely pay 17% of the property taxes that fund the public schools; he has a point in trying to keep those suburbs within CMS.
Jenna Morehead (age 48): Former school social worker who says she was the past president of a school board in another state (which she does not specify). She responded to an online survey somewhat quizzically. When asked what specific problems she saw with CMS, her answer was “I am currently not aware of specific issues or concerns.” Hmmm. She also says she is an advocate of free breakfast for students—something that CMS already provides. I really cannot recommend this candidate as she seems ill-informed about CMS’ issues.
Donna Parker-Tate (age 68): Former educator (including school principal) and currently an educational consultant. She had a lot of vague responses in an online survey but seems knowledgeable about CMS, charter schools and the differences between giving resources to low-performing schools while not hurting high-performing schools.
Jordan Pineda: Former Teach for America teacher. Much of his website talks about the gap in early education for children of color and opportunities provided to them. He says he wants to represent the “91,000 kids of color in CMS.”
Olivia Scott: Ran unsuccessfully in the past. Hasn’t really campaigned or provided any useful information about herself or her candidacy though she did run in 2017 and editorials at the time seemed to suggest she could be a decent candidate.
Lenora Shipp (age 61): Former teacher and principal in CMS, CMS graduate and CMS parent. The Charlotte Observer has also endorsed her. Her key areas of interest appear to be educational equity, school safety, more parent involvement, quality teachers and more elementary programs to support early achievement (in that order on her website).
Stephanie Sneed (age 44): Attorney for child protective services, and has run for city council in the past. Her site has a number of vague positions like “closing the achievement gap” and “providing support to teachers and staff.”
Duncan St. Clair (age 42): He was a CMS student, his father was a longtime CMS teacher. He has extensive thoughts (though often generalized) on his website about most educational issues (e.g. city vs suburbs, climate change, safety and security). He wants to involve more parents (validating parking for parents who visit CMS was one thing he mentions on his website) but his positions do seem a bit out of touch with other candidates who talk about early education, minority students being left behind, etc. He also says that he is the owner of a small batch coffee company but it’s so small I’m not sure if he has another job to pay his bills. His LinkedIn profile has him as a park ranger and an insurance adjuster in his past.
Queen Thompson (age 70+). Former CMS employee who “monitored federal compliance and coordinated services for students with special needs.” She has previously run for the board of education and county commissioner in the past. She believes a large percent of students are victims of “educational malpractice.”
Monty Witherspoon (age 39). A pastor at Steele Creeke AME Zion Church and former substitute teacher in NYC. He wants “all CMS graduates to be college or career ready.” Like several other candidates, he wants to increase the number of AP classes (I’m not sure why that is such a big deal unless you have excellent teachers who can help students get 4 or 5s on the tests. Many students have to supplement studying on their own anyway with online help so merely checking the box of APs doesn’t seem to be all that valuable.)
Mecklenburg County Sales Tax
This is a proposed hike in our sales tax of 0.25% so it should go up to 7.5% if this passes. There are broad allocations that this increase will support education, arts and our public parks. Opponents say that details on what will get funded, by how much and whether or not these issues are the most important ones that should get funded haven’t been provided. I must say that in my experience with Mecklenburg County (this is true about bonds too), there is very little detail. Voters are expected to approve things with very little detail on how beneficiaries were chosen, which regions will benefit or by how much. In the business world, no one gets money they ask for unless detailed business plans are drafted and presented. I’m baffled why voters don’t demand and government officials don’t present such similar business plans for voters.

2019.08.10 07:45 Ainsoph777 Father Felix Morlion of Pro Deo, the money launderer extraordinaire

Catholic Priests also act as lobbyists and can attract billions of dollars to covert intelligence projects. Witness Father Felix Morlion, a Belgian Dominican priest who founded the Catholic intelligence organization Pro Deo. The devout Catholic William “Wild Bill” Donovan made a pact with Father Felix Morlion to merge their intelligence apparatus’s together. When the Nazis took control of western Europe, Donovan helped Morlion move his propaganda operations from Lisbon to New York.

Avro Manhattan in his 1985 book Murder in the Vatican briefly mentions this relationship. “During World War II, in July 1944, for instance, Pope Pius XII decorated General William Donovan with the Grand Cross of the Order of St. Sylvester, a reward given only to 100 other men, 'who by outstanding deed...championed the Church.' The significance of the reward was in the fact that Donovan had served as a chief of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), the wartime predecessor of the Central Intelligence Agency, or CIA. Early in the war, in 1941, Donovan had already forged an alliance with the founder of a Catholic intelligence agency, called Pro Deo (Felix Morlion) . The two agencies collaborated during and after the war, to such an extent that eventually they amalgamated. This resulted in the de facto integration of the CIA and of the Vatican intelligence, into a global USA-Vatican apparatus, whose operations now encompassed the globe. The amalgamation operated in favour of the advancement of the Catholic Church in the political fields, at home and abroad. And indeed, in joint USA-Vatican promotion of their respective objectives. It helped in the promotion of Presidential candidates in the USA, and in the promotion of potential papal candidates in the Vatican. The Vatican-CIA spying operations have assessed both Presidents and Popes, during the past three decades, and acted accordingly.” https://archive.org/details/MurderInTheVatican

Father Morlion’s financial intrigues are shown in a declassified letter of the Inter-American Development Bank (The bank of the Organization of American States (OAS)), dated April 11th 1966. The letter is from Grayton Upton, an executive vice President of the Bank, to Walter Rostow, special assistant to the Jesuit educated U.S. President Lyndon Johnson. The subject heading on the letter is revealing in itself: “Father Morlion and Program, of Catholic Church for Indoctrination of Latin American Priests in Divulgation of Principles of U.S. Free Enterprise System.”
Parts of Grayton Upton’s letter to Walter Rostow include: “You will recollect the lunch here at the Bank a few weeks ago with Father Morlion. I now enclose a description of what he is doing. I personally consider this matter of the utmost importance to U.S. Policy makers for Latin America, and ask you to give it the most serious study. I first met Father Morlion at the Caracas meeting of CICYP last year. There he gave a short talk in which he said, in effect, that after a year or so of letting the priesthood in Latin America follow their own ideas with respect to economics (and politics) the Pope had decided to make a major effort to indoctrinate them in the concepts of the free enterprise system and to insist that they take an active role in teaching these concepts. The chief mechanism for this is the International University for Social Studies Pro Deo in Rome, which I understand must in the future be attended by any Latin American Priest before he rises to a higher level in the Catholic hierarchy. In addition the various economic and social directives which will be issued to the Church in Latin America.”
Continuing “In effect what Father Morlion now wishes to obtain is the following: 1. ) A serious review of, and orientation in, this whole effort by the U.S. Government (I understand that Ambassador Reinhardt is well informed on the matter.) 2. ) The strong moral backing of the U.S. Government, in a discreet fashion, of this effort. In this respect, as a first step, he wants to arrange a lunch in which you both, and hopefully Lincoln Gordon, would be present, with as many of the U.S. Directors as possible, where you would indicate the moral support of the U.S. Government for this effort - a support which would hopefully contribute towards substantial private contributions from U.S. business. 3. ) An investigation of the possibility of financial support for this effort by the U.S. Government through an appropriate agency”.
The banker Grayton Upton notes:
“For obvious reasons, efforts have been made to date to give no publicity to the program” and says in conclusion “PS: I understand that commitments have already been received for contributions from business of $250M (250 Million)and that Father Morlion expects this to be increased to $1MM (1 Billion) in the next few weeks.”
Father Felix Morlion sent Grayton Upton a correspondence (April 6th, 1966) five days previous the letter quoted above from Upton to Walter Rostow:
“Mr. Grayton Upton
Executive Vice President
Inter-American Development Bank
808 17th Street
Washington, D. C.
Dear Friend,
Here with the second draft improved on the basis of your suggestions. If you think the matter is sufficiently clear, you might send to Mr. Mann, Mr. Gordon, Mr. Rostov photostats of this so that they can tell you which day - they could eventually meet with a few business-men to conclude the first phase. Mr. Huerdemat or another assistant can eventually make some further improvements after phoning me. Before the middle of next week, I hope to tell you what first payments are made by some of the business leaders approached. As you can imagine, the Rome authorities are waiting for my return at the end of the month to start preparations in practice. I want to thank you again in the name of my high Roman friends for the inspiration you gave me in Caracas and the help so generously these days. We will need very much that you should repeat your speech of Caracas in one of our Rome symposia, possibly in the Autumn.
Totus tuus Pro Deo
Felix A. Morlion
Pres., Intern. Pro Deo University”

Jesuit trained Galo Plaza, former president of Ecuador, became Secretary general of the OAS (the parent organization of the Inter-American Development Bank), just 2 years after these above exchanges! : Here is a quick background on Galo Plaza : " Galo Plaza seemed perfect for restoring the OAS’s internal stability and improving the organization’s image. Rockefeller circles likened him to an “international troubleshooter.” Loyal to his roots as a major Ecuadorian landowner, lawyer for the United Fruit Company, and former student at the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service (Jesuit), Galo Plaza could be counted on to maintain order within the organization while ensuring OAS support for CIA subversion of leftist-minded governments, not only in Ecuador (where the Velasco and Arosemena governments had both fallen to CIA-backed coups), but throughout Latin America. He had also endorsed the efforts of Nelson’s brother, John 3rd, to introduce birth control among Ecuador’s Indians through the Agency for International Development, a major new policy initiative. In addition, Galo Plaza could ensure the hemisphere wide transfer of rural development programs from Rockefeller's American International Association for Economic and Social Development (AIA) to the OAS. Most important, all this would give Rockefeller, through his influence on Galo Plaza, added weight not only in the OAS, but also in any White House deliberation over using the OAS "- Thy Will Be Done : The Conquest Of The Amazon, Nelson Rockefeller And Evangelism In The Age Of Oil ,Gerard Colby, Charlotte Dennett,

There is quite a bit of information on Father Felix Morlion's activities in Paul L. Williams book Operation Gladio : The Unholy Alliance between the Vatican, the CIA, and the Mafia, particularly with Mehmet Ali Agca and the "Bulgarian Connection" hoax here are some excerpts :https://archive.org/details/OperationGladioTheUnholyAllianceBetweenTheVaticanTheCIAAndTheMafia/page/n1

" Fr. Felix Morlion, a Belgian priest, was affiliated with the Hyperion Language School and served to establish a branch of the “school” in Rome. During World War II, he had worked closely with Wild Bill Donovan and the Office of Strategic Services by creating Pro Deo a Catholic intelligence agency. When the Nazis seized control of Western Europe, Donovan relocated Morlion and his agency from Lisbon to New York. In 1945, the priest relocated to Rome, where he became the private emissary of Pope Pius XII and four of the pope’s successors. Throughout the 1960s, he remained a pivotal US intelligence agent, as witnessed by his key role in the Cuban Missile Crisis. At JFK’s urging, the Dominican priest had attended a strategic meeting in Andover, Massachusetts, where he established a communication channel between Moscow and Washington, mediated by Pope John XXIII, through whom messages were passed that brought an end to the threat of a nuclear war. In 1966, Morlion established, with funding from the CIA, the Pro Deo University which became Libera Università Internazionale degli Studi Sociali (the International University of Social Studies). As president of the new university, Morlion became a force in the formation of the right-wing policies of the Italian government. He also reportedly began recruiting of terrorists and assassins, including Moretti and Mehmet Ali Ağca (who attempted the hit on John Paul II) ...... In 1981, Count Alexandre de Marenches, the chief executive of the Service de Documentation Extérieure et de Contre-Espionnage (SDECE—the French secret service), served as the leader of Safari. Marenches was also a member of the SMOM(Knights of Malta), along with CIA director William Casey, Secretary of State Alexander Haig, Treasury Secretary William Simon, US ambassador to the Vatican William Wilson, Licio Gelli, Fr. Felix Morlion, and General Santovito of SISMI. Through the SMOM, Marenches became aware of John Paul II’s negotiations with the Kremlin and agreed that the Polish upstart had to be removed from the Holy Office ......... On April 18, Ağca, Çatlı, and Çelik traveled to Milan to meet with Bekir Çelenk at Stibam. They stayed at the Hotel Agosta, where Ağca registered under the name Faruk Ozgun. From Milan, the trio made their way to Rome for a visit with Morlion to learn the layout of the priest’s apartment. On April 23, the day John Paul II was holding a private audience with CIA director William Casey, the Turks were provided with 9mm Browning Hi Power semiautomatic pistols with 13-round cartridge clips. They had received training on the use of these weapons by CIA agent Frank Terpil. The semiautomatics had been imported from East Germany by Horst Grillmayer, an arms dealer and operative of the BND. The place of origin was significant since the pistols, when found, would support the Bulgarian thesis...... Ağca was sentenced to life in prison with one year of solitary confinement. Despite this sentence, the prisoner soon received an ongoing stream of surprising visitors, including Francesco Pazienza, General Santovito, Fr. Morlion, members of the Camorra (including fellow prisoner Raffaelo Cutolo), agents from the CIA, and Monsignor Marcello Morgante, who represented Archbishop Marcinkus of the IOR. The visits were choreographed by Pazienza to advance the Bulgarian thesis. During his daily visits, Pazienza, with Cutolo at his side, showed Ağca photographs of Antonov and several Bulgarians they wished to implicate in the assassination attempt. For hours, Ağca poured over the photos, memorizing distinctive characteristics and receiving information about the personal habits and tics of the fall guys... Another problem came from Ağca’s description of Antonov’s apartment. The distinctive features he described, including an ornate room divider between the living and dining areas, were not found in the Bulgarian’s living quarters. They were unique to the flat one floor below, which was occupied by Fr. Morlion. Ağca also mentioned meeting Antonov’s wife and children during the planning sessions in April. But the Bulgarian’s family was not in Rome at that time. They had returned to Bulgaria."

In declassified letters on the subject of Pro Deo, from C.D Jackson to Henry Luce it is seen that Father Felix Morlion was in communiucation with the fundraiser John Price Jones who raised over a billion dollars with his fundraising! " Morlion has also been talking to John Price Jones. When I explained to him that these fund~raising organizations did not actually solicit money themselves but acted as a professional secretariat for the appropriate individuals, Morlion assured me that this was different. and that they had an individual who had "done the Work for Fordham". I posit that who had "done the work for Fordham" was Fordham educated Cardinal Francis Spellman. Quoting from Covert Action Information Bulletin #25, we see Spellman was reported to have been apart of the Pro Deo network.
" In the latter part of April 1948 the Romanian Timpul published an article, “The Vatican Espionage Service,” citedin the Soviet Journal New Times, No.31, 1948, at pp. 5, 6. As reported, the article indicated that, “In 1946 the Pope entrusted the Dominican friar [Felix A.] Morlion, a Belgian, with the reorganization of the Vatican intelligence service and its merger with the Jesuit espionage network. The central intelligence department of the Vatican is headed by Janssens, a general of the Jesuit Order. His deputy is Montini, the acting Vatican Secretary of State, and his assistants are Schmider, the administrative director of the central Jesuit espionage bureau, and Morlion, director of Centro d’informazione pro Deo. The central intelligence department is subdivided into branches and sections dealing with the various countries. One of the main branches is the socalled ‘special division’ which operates under the signboard of the Centro d’informazione pro Deo press agency. Similar divisions have been set up in the Centro d’informazione pro Deo units in all parts of the world. In New York the ‘special division’ is directed by Cardinal Spellman, in Innsbruck(Austria) by Regent, the rector of a Jesuit college, in Coblenz (Germany) by the Catholic priest Poelaert who is also director of the Catholic press agency. The branch in charge of espionage in Eastern and Southeastern Europe is supervised by Schmider and Preseren, the Jesuits’ chief expert on the Slav countries and adviser to the Vatican Secretary of State. In August 1966, Morlion approached H.L. Hunt for funding Vatican anti-Communist operations in Latin America. Hunt gave an interview to the British Guardian Weekly, February 27, 1969: “ ‘I was approached by Paolo Cardinal Marella, who said he spoke for the Pope and asked if I would supply members of my [20,000 member] Youth Freedom Speakers’ movement who spoke Spanish to be sent south [to Latin America] to engage in speech making and activities. I was told the Pope was thinking in terms of 11 million dollars a year support for the entire movement against communism in Spanish-speaking countries.’ . , . The project was now centered in New York, at the Asian Speakers Bureau, with the Free Pacific Association, Inc., on Riverside Drive [another front for the Rev. Moon’s Unification Church]. A key figure in this papal concern over Leftist threats to the Vatican’s greatest stronghold was the Rev. Felix A. Morlion, who was present at the original discussions.” Subsequently, Morlion emerged as a key figure in the “Bulgarian Connection” hoax when the fascist Grey Wolf Agca attempted to assassinate the Pope: It appears that Morlion lived in Rome directly below the apartment of theBulgarian Antonov, and was a possible source of Agea’s description of Antonov’s apartment. the Jesuit Father Robert Graham confirmed that Morlion was a CIA agent. He was quoted in a Italian article from La Repubblica titled THE PIOUS FRIAR WORKING FOR THE CIA : " "Yes, Father Felix Morlion was from the CIA, he was a big point of reference for American intelligence". This was declared by Jesuit Father Robert Graham, one of the most qualified espionage history scholars. Father Graham added that Morlion, who died two years ago, was called "Cip" meaning "Pro-Deo Information Center". Pro Deo comes up in the Will H Hays Memoirs. Hayes was the first chairman of the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America
: " The most significant experiences of the trip, especially in the light of later events, were my visits with Cardinal Pacelli and Count Galleazzi, which the latter graciously arranged. In two pleasant social calls Mrs. Hays and I found the cardinal most sympathetic and surprisingly well informed about America. He spoke excellent English. I also had another visit of at least two hours, during which he told me quite frankly the purpose of his visit to the United States—it had to do with the Pro Deo movement—noting that it was the first such official visit of a papal secretary of state. It was during these visits that I learned that a private audience with Pope Pius XI would be arranged for me soon after we reached Rome. " ......" In the midst of the conversation the Pope picked up a big loose-leaf book, two or three inches thick, lying on his table, and pushed it toward me. He explained that this volume of reports contained the series of original communiques sent out from the Comintern in Moscow to comrades and fellow travelers all over the world, and that one of the most emphatic orders was to "go out and get hold of the cinema of the world." This was a shocking revelation, backed as it was by such irrefutable evidence, and it sheds clear light on Communist efforts in sub- sequent years. When we had finished discussing motion pictures, the Holy Father went at once into the Pro Deo movement, of which Cardinal Pacelli had given me some account on our trip over. I was again impressed by the unity and the world sweep of the organized idea: that the Church was leading a movement of religionists everywhere, a united movement for God and the good in a concerted drive to oppose the spread of Communism."....." Finally reaching the secretary's room adjoining the private office of the Holy Father, we were greeted most cordially in scholarly English of a distinctly New England flavor by a man who seemed like an old friend. He repeated Count Galleazzi's suggestion about speaking freely and said he would see us when we came out. This was none other than our own Cardinal Spellman! A moment later we found ourselves in the presence of the Pope, seated at his broad desk placed in the middle of a small platform raised perhaps a foot above the floor. He was in the familiar white raiment, with the white cap; and his calm presence was a benediction. I was shown to a chair at the Holy Father's right, with Count Galleazzi at my right and Mrs. Hays still farther to the right, opposite the Holy Father." source : (https://archive.org/details/memoirs00hays/page/n0)

Morlion was very involved in the film industry himself, : " In an article published in 1954 in La Rivista del Cinematografo (the official Catholic film journal published by the Centro Cattolico Cinematografi co), the Belgian Jesuit Félix A. Morlion clarified the Catholic awareness of the power of cinema and its obligation to fight against Communists in the film industry. Morlion was heavily involved in Italian cinema in the post-war period. He contributed to the creation of the Cineforum (see the next section titled American Cinema and Catholic Press) and collaborated with film directors, such as Roberto Rossellini. His article (RC 1954: 5) not only listed all the Communist cinema initiatives—such as the creation of the ‘cinebrigate di informazione’ (Information Cine-Brigades), information groups which had the responsibility for strengthening the party by distributing audiovisual propaganda documents in large and small centres, but also highlighted the dissemination of those Christian values through the medium of cinema.

There he gave a short talk in which he said, in effect, that after a year or so of letting the priesthood in Latin America follow their own ideas with respect to economics (and politics) the Pope had decided to make a major effort to indoctrinate them in the concepts of the free enterprise system and to insist that they take an active role in teaching these con- cepts.

Williams book Operation Gladio : The Unholy Alliance between the Vatican, the CIA, and the Mafia, here are some excerpts : https://archive.org/details/OperationGladioTheUnholyAllianceBetweenTheVaticanTheCIAAndTheMafia/page/n1

Marenches was also a member of the SMOM, along with CIA director William Casey, Secretary of State Alexander Haig, Treasury Secretary William Simon, US ambassador to the Vatican William Wilson, Licio Gelli, Fr. 21 From Milan, the trio made their way to Rome for a visit with Morlion to learn the layout of the priest’s apartment. 34 The visits were choreographed by Pazienza to advance the Bulgarian thesis. " The concern of society regarding the education of future businessmen derives from the need for competent and prudent leadership in a civilization that is becoming increasingly more complex and technological. Society, understandably, is turning for leadership to the scientist and the businessman. With respect to the latter, the term economic-social manager is currently used. There is a demand for managers to be "leaders of the community for which they are in fact also co-responsible." Writing about this need, Father Felix A. Morlion, O.P., in "Government of Business and the Responsibility of the University," an address to the First International Conference on Training with Industry, states: "For history itself is now moving at an accelerated speed. In less than a hundred years economic progress has brought forth more social progress than the sum total of thousands of years. In the next fifty years atomic energy, electronic "brains," and automation will have created the material conditions for the full development of man all over the world. The question is now: Who will govern the enterprise which can create a higher standard of life, spiritual as well as material, for every man and woman on earth? The answer is obvious: not the political organizer but the economic-social manager." It is his firm conviction, therefore, that "industrial training requires university education.""

by John Lord, LL.D. OF the great Fathers, few are dearer to the Church than Ambrose, Archbishop of Milan, both on account of his virtues and the dignity he gave to the episcopal office. Nearly all the great Fathers were bishops, but I select Ambrose as the representative of their order, because he was more illustrious as a prelate than as a theologian or orator, although he stood high as both. He contributed more than any man who preceded him to raise the power of bishops as one of the controlling agencies of society for more than a thousand years. The episcopal office, aside from its spiritual aspects, had become a great worldly dignity as early as the fourth century. It gave its possessor rank, power, wealth, — a superb social position, even in the eyes of worldly men. "Make me but bishop of Rome," said a great Pagan general, "and I too would become a Christian." As archbishop of Milan, the second city of Italy, Ambrose found himself one of the highest dignitaries of the Empire. Whence this great power of bishops? How hap- pened it that the humble ministers of a new and per- secuted religion became princes of the the earth? What a change from the outward condition of Paul and Peter to that of Ambrose and Leo! It would be unpleasant to present this subject on controversial and sectarian grounds. Let those people — and they are numerous — who believe in the divine right of bishops, enjoy their opinion; it is not for me to assail them. Let any party in the Church universal advocate the divine institution of their own form of government. But I do not believe that any particular form of government is laid down in the Bible; and yet I admit that church government is as essential and fundamental a matter as a worldly government. Gov- ernment, then, must be in both Church and State. This is recognized in the Scriptures. No institution or State can live without it. Men are exhorted by apostles to obey it, as a Christian duty. But they do not prescribe the form, — leaving that to be settled by the circum- stances of the times, the wants of nations, the exigen- cies of the religious world. And whatever form of gov- ernment arises, and is confirmed by the wisest and best men, is to be sustained, is to be obeyed. The people of Germany recognize imperial authority: it may be the best government for them. England is practically ruled by an aristocracy, — for the House of Commons is virtually as aristocratic in sympathies as the House of Lords. In this country we have a representation of the people, chosen by the people, and ruling for the people. we think this is the best form of government for us, — just now. In Athens there was a pure democ- racy. Which of these forms of civil government did God appoint? So in the Church. For four centuries the bishops controlled the infant Church. For ten centuries after- wards the Popes ruled the Christian world, and claimed a divine right. The government of the Church assumed the theocratic form. At the Reformation numerous sects arose, most of them claiming the indorsement of the Scriptures. Some of these sects became very high- church; that is, they based their organization on the supposed authority of the Bible. All these sects are sincere, but they differ and they have a right to differ. Probably the day will never come when there will be uniformity of opinion on church government, any more than on doctrines in theology. Now it seems to me that episcopal power arose, like all other powers, from the circumstances of society, — the wants of the age. One thing cannot be disputed, the the early bishop — or presbyter, or elder, whatever name you chose to call him — was a very humble and unimportant person in the eyes of the world. He lived in no state , in no dignity; he had no wealth and no social position outside his flock. He preached in an upper chamber or in catacombs. Saint Paul preached at Rome with chains on his arms or legs. The apostles preached to plain people, to common people, and lived sometimes by the work of their own hands. In a cen- tury or two, although the Church was still hunted and persecuted, there were nevertheless many converts. These converts contributed from their small means to the support of the poor. At first the deacons, who seem to have been laymen, had charge of this money. Paul was too busy a man himself to serve tables. Gradually there arose the need of a superintendent, or overseer; and that is the meaning of the Greek word επίσκοπος, from which we get our term bishop. Soon, therefore, the superintendent or bishop of the local church had the control of the public funds, the expendi- ture of which he directed. This was necessary. As converts multiplied and wealth increased, it became indispensable for the clergy of the city to have a head; this officer became presiding elder, or bishop, — whose great duty, however, was to preach. In another cen- tury these bishops had become influential; and when Christianity was established by Constantine as the religion of the Empire, they added power to influence, for they disbursed great revenues and ruled a large body of inferior clergy. They were looked up to; they became honored and revered; they deserved to be, for they were good men, and some of them learned. Then they sought a warrant for their power outside the cir- cumstances to which they were indebted for their eleva- tion. It was easy to find it. What sect cannot find it? They strained texts of Scripture, — as that great and good man, Moses Stuart, of Andover, in his zeal for the temperance cause, strained texts to prove that the wine of Palestine did not intoxicate. But whatever were the causes which led to the elevat- tion and ascendancy of bishops, that fact is clear enough that episcopal authority began at an early date; and that bishops were influential in the third century and powerful in the fourth, — a most fortunate thing, as I conceive, for the Church at the same time. As early as the third century we read of so great a man as the martyr Cyprian declaring "that bishops had the same rights as apostles, whose successors they were." In the fourth century, such illustrious men as Eusebius of Emesa, Athanasius of Alexandria, Basil of Cæsarea, Gregory of Nyssa, Martin of Tours, Chrysostom of Constanti- nople, and Augustine of Hippo, and sundry other great men whose writing swayed the human mind until the Reformation, advocated equally high-church preten- sions. The bishops of that day lived in a state of worldly grandeur, reduced the power of presbyters to a shadow, seated themselves on thrones, surrounded themselves with the insignia of princes, claimed the right of judging in civil matters, multiplied the offi- ces of the Church, and controlled revenues greater than the incomes of senators and patricians. As for the bishoprics of Rome, Constantinople, Alexandria, Anti- och, and Milan, they were great governments, and re- quired men of great executive ability to rule them. Preaching gave way to the multiplied duties and cares of an exalted station. A bishop was then not often selected because he could preach well, but because he knew how to govern. Who, even in our times, would think of filling the See of London, although it is Prot- estant, with a man whose chief merit is in his elo- quence? They want a business man for such a post. Eloquence is no objection, but executive ability is the thing most needed. So Providence imposed great duties on the bishops of the fourth century, especially in large cities; and very able as well as good men were required for this position, equally one of honor and authority. The See of Milan was then one of the most important in the Empire. It was the seat of imperial government. Valentinian, an able general, bore the sceptre of the West; for the Empire was then divided, — Valentinian ruling the eastern, and his brother Gratian the western, portion of it, — and, as the Goths were overrunning the civilized world and threatening Italy, Valentinian fixed his seat of government at Milan. It was a turbulent city, disgraced by mobs and religious fac- tions. The Arian party, headed by the Empress Jus- tina, mother of the young emperor, was exceedingly powerful. It was a critical period, and even orthodoxy was in danger of being subverted. I might dwell on the miseries of that period, immediately preceding the fall of the Empire; but all I will say is, that the See of Milan needed a very able, conscientious, and wise prelate. Hence Ambrose was selected, not by the emperors but by the people, in whom was vested the right of election. He was then governor of that part of Italy now em- braced by the archbishoprics of Milan, Turin, Genoa, Ravenna, and Bologna, — the greater part of Lombardy and Sardinia. He belonged to an illustrious Roman family. His father had been prætorian prefect of Gaul, which embraced not only Gaul, but Britain and Africa, — about a third of the Roman Empire. The seat of this great prefecture was Treves; and here Ambrose was born in the year 340. His early days were of course passed in luxury and pomp. On the death of his father he retired to Rome to complete his education, and soon outstripped his noble companions in learning and accomplishments. Such was his character and posi- tion that he was selected, at the age of thirty-four, for the government of Northern Italy. Nothing eventful marked his rule as governor, except that he was just, humane, and able. Had he continued governor, his name would not have passed down in history; he would have been forgotten like other provincial gov- ernors. But he was destined for a higher sphere and a more exalted position than that of governor of an important province. On the death of Archbishop Auxentius, A.D. 374, the See of Milan became vacant. A great man was required for the archbishopric in that age of factions, heresies , and tumults. The whole city was thrown into the wildest excitement. The emperor wisely declined to interfere with the election. Rival parties could not agree on a candidate. A tumult arose. The governor — Ambrose — proceeded to the cathedral church, where the election was going on, to appease the tumult. His appearance produced a mo- mentary calm, when a little child cried out, "Let Am- brose our governor be our bishop!" That cry was regarded as a voice from heaven, — as the voice of inspiration. The people caught the words, re-echoed the cry, and tumultuously shouted, "Yes! let Ambrose our governor be our bishop!" And the governor of a great province became arch- bishop of Milan. This is a very significant fact. It shows the great dignity and power of the episcopal office at that time: it transcended in the influence and power the governorship of the province. It also shows the enormous strides which the Church had made as one of the mighty powers of the world since Constan- tine, only about sixty years before, hap opened to organ- ized Christianity the possibilities of influence. It shows how much more already was thought of a bishop than of a governor. And what is very remarkable, Ambrose had not even been baptized. He was a layman. There is no evi- dence that he was Christian except in name. He had passed through no deep experience such as Augus- tine did, shortly after this. It was a more remarkable appointment than when Henry II. made his chancellor, Becket, archbishop of Canterbury. Why was Ambrose elevated to that great ecclesiastical post? What hat he done for the Church? Did he feel the responsibility of his priestly office? Did he realize that he was raised in his social position, even in the eyes of an emperor? Why did he not shrink from such and office, on the grounds of unfitness? The fact is, as proven by his subsequent administra- tion, he was the ablest man for that post to be found in Italy. He was really the most fitting man. If ever a man was called to be a priest, he was called. He had the confidence of both the emperor and the people. Such confidence can be based only on transcendent char- acter. He was not selected because he was learned or eloquent, but because he had administrative ability; and because he was just and virtuous. A great outward change in his life marked his eleva- tion, as in Becket afterwards. As soon as he was bap- tized, he parted with his princely fortune and scattered it among the poor, like Cyprian and Chrysostom. This was in accordance with one of the great ideas of the early Church, almost impossible to resist. Charity unbounded, allied with poverty, was the great test of practical Christianity. It was far less insisted upon by the Catholic Church in the Middle Ages, and never was recognized by Protestantism at all, not even in theory. Thrift has been one of the watchwords of Protestantism for three hundred years. One of the boasts of Protestantism has been its superior material prosperity. Travellers have harped on the worldly thrift of Protestant countries. The Puritans, full of the Old Testament, like the Jews, rejoiced in an outward prosperity as one of the evidences of the favor of God. The Catholics accuse the Protestants, of not only giving birth to rationalism, in their desire to extend liberality of mind, but of fostering a material life in their ambi- tion to be outwardly prosperous. I make no comment on this fact; I only state it, for everybody knows the accusation to be true, and most people rejoice in it. One of the chief arguments I used to hear for the observance of public worship was, that it would raise the value of property and improve the temporal condition of the wor- shippers, — so that temporal thrift was made to be indis- solubly connected with public worship. "Go to church, and you will thrive in business. Become a Sabbath- school teacher, and you will gain social position." Such arguments logically grow out from linking the kingdom of heaven with success in life, and worldly prosperity with the outward performances of religious duties, — all of which may be true, and certainly marks Protest- antism, but is somewhat different from the ideas of the Church eighteen hundred years ago. But those were un- enlightened times, when men said, "How hardly shall they who have riches enter into the kingdom of God." I pass now to consider the services which Ambrose rendered to the Church, and which have given him a name in history. One of these was the zealous conservation of the truths he received on authority. To guard the purity of the faith was one of the most important functions of a primitive bishop. The last thing the Church would tolerate in one of her overseers was a Gallio in religion. She scorned those philosophical dignitaries who would sit in the seats of Moses and Paul, and use the specula- tions of the Greeks to build up the orthodox faith. The last thing which a primitive bishop thought of was to advance against Goliath, not with the sling of David, but with the weapons of Pagan Grecian schools. It was incumbent on the watchman who stood on the walls of Zion, to see that no suspicious enemy entered her hallowed gates. The Church gave to him that trust, and reposed in his fidelity. Now Ambrose was not a great scholar, not a subtle theologian. Nor was he dexterous in the use of dialectical weapons, like Atha- nasius, Augustine, or Thomas Aquinas. But he was sufficiently intelligent to know what the authorities de- clared to be orthodox. He knew that the fashionable speciulations about the Trinity were not the doctrines of Paul. He knew that self-expiation was not the expia- tion of the cross; that the mission of Christ was some- thing more than to set a good example; that faith was not estimation merely; that regeneration was not a mere external change of life; that the Divine government was a perpetual interference to bring good out of evil, even if it were in accordance with natural law. He knew that the boastful philosophy by which some sought to bolster up Christianity was that against which the apostles had warned the faithful. He knew that the Church was attacked in her most vital points, even in doctrines, — for "as man thinketh, so is he." So he fearlessly entered the lists against the heretics, most of whom were enrolled among the Manicheans, Pelagians, and Arians. The Manichean were not the most dangerous, but they were the most offensive. Their doctrines were too absurd to gain a lasting foothold in the West. But they made great pretensions to advanced thought, and en- grafted on Christianity the speculations of the East as to the origin of evil and the nature of God. They were not only dreamy theosophists, but materialists under the disguise of spiritualism. I shall have more to say of these people in the next Lecture, on Augustine, since one of his great fights was against the Manichean heresy. So I pass them by with only a brief allusion to their opinions. The Arians were the most powerful and numerous body of heretics, — if I may use the language of histo- rians, — and it was against these that Ambrose chiefly contended. The great battle against them had been fought by Athanasius two generations before; but they had not been put down. Their doctrines extensively prevailed among many of the barbaric chieftains, and the empress herself was an Arian, as well as many distinguished bishops. Ambrose did not deny the great intellectual ability of Arius, nor the purity of his morals; but he saw in his doctrines the virtual denial of Christ's divinity and atonement, and a glorifi- cation of the reason, and an exaltation of the will, which rendered special divine grace unnecessary. The Arian controversy, which lasted one hundred years, and has been repeatedly revived, was not merely a dia- lectical display, not a war of words, but the most im- portant controversy in which theologians ever enlisted, and the most vital in its logical deductions. Macaulay sneers at the homoousian and the homoiousian; and when viewed in a technical point of view, it may seem to many frivolous and vain. But the distinctions of the Trinity, which Arius sought to sweep away, are essential to the unity and completeness of the whole scheme of salvation, as held by the Church to have been revealed in the Scriptures; for if Christ is a mere creature of God, — a creation, and not one with Him in essence, — the his death would avail nothing for the efficacy of salvation; or, — to use the language of theologians, who have ever unfortunately blended the declarations and facts of Scrip- ture with dialectical formularies, which are deductions made by reason and logic from accepted truths, yet not so binding as the plain truths themselves, — Christ's death would be insufficient for an infinite redemption. No propitiation of a created being could atone for the sins of all other creatures. Thus by the Arian theory the Christ of the orthodox church was blotted out, and a man was substituted, who was divine only in the matchless purity of his life and the transcendent wisdom of his utterances; so that Christ, logically, was a pattern and teacher, and not a redeemer. Now, historically, every- body knows that for three hundred years Christ was viewed and worshipped as the Son of God, — a divine, uncreated being, who assumed a mortal form to make an atonement or propitiation for the sins of the world. Hence the doctrines of Arius undermined, so far as they were received, the whole theology of the early Church, and obscure the light of faith itself. I am compelled to say this, if I speak at all of the Arians, which I do his- torically rather than controversially. If I eliminated theology and political theories and changes from my Lectures altogether, there would be nothing left but commonplace matter. But Ambrose had powerful enemies to contend with in defence of the received doctrines of the Church. The Empress Faustina was herself an Arian, and the patroness of the sect. Milan was filled with its defend- ers, turbulent and insolent under the shield of the court. It was the headquarters of the sect at that time. Arian- ism was fashionable; and the empress had caused an edict to be passed, in the name of her son Valentinian, by which liberty of conscience and worship was granted to the Arians. She also caused a bishop of her nomina- tion and creed to challenge Ambrose to a public dispu- tation in her palace on the points of the question. Now what course did Ambrose pursue? Nothing could be fairer, apparently, than the proposal of the empress, — nothing more just than her demands. We should say that she had enlightened reason on her side, for heresy can never be exterminated by force, unless the force is overwhelming, — as in the persecution of the Huguenots by Louis XIV., or the slaughter of the Albigenses by Innocent III. or the princes he incited to that cruel act. Ambrose, however, did not regard the edict as suggested by the love of toleration, but as the desire for ascend- ency, — as an advanced post to be taken in the conflict, — introductory to the triumph of the Arian doctrines in the West, and which the Arian emperor and his bishops intended should ultimately be the established religion of the Western nations. It was not a fight for toleration, but for ascendency. Moreover Ambrose saw in Arianism a hostile creed, — a dangerous error, subver- sive of what is most vital to Christianity. So he deter- mined to make no concessions at all, to give no foothold to the enemy in a desperate fight. The least concession, he thought, would be followed by the demand for new con- cessions, and would be a cause of rejoicing to his enemies and of humiliation to his friends; and in accordance with the everlasting principles of all successful warfare he resolved to yield not one jot or tittle. The slightest concession was a compromise, and a compromise might lead to defeat. There could be no compromise on such a vital question as the divinity of our Lord. He might have conceded the wisdom of compromise, in some quar- rel about temporal matters. Had he, as governor of a province been required to make some concessions to con- quering barbarians, — had he been a modern statesman devising a constitution, a matter of government, — he might have acted differently. A policy about tariffs and revenues, all resting on unsettled principles of poli- tical economy, may have been a matter of compromise, — not the fundamental principles of the Christian reli- gion as declared by inspiration, and which he was bound to accept as they were revealed and declared, whether they could be reconciled with his reason or not. There is great moral grandeur in the conflict of fundamental principles of religion; and there is equal grandeur in the conflict between principles and principalities, be- tween combatants armed with spiritual weapons and combatants armed with the temporal sword, between defenceless priests and powerful emperors, between sub- jects and the powers that be, between men speaking in the name of God Almighty and men at the heads of armies, — the former strong in the invisible power of truth; the latter resplendent with material force.

She especially can’t stand the judgmental and arrogant Darius. Yet as Zuri and Darius are forced to find common ground, their initial dislike shifts into an unexpected understanding.

2018.07.13 15:07 Tony49UK MET OFFICE: Yellow weather warning TODAY for thunder and heavy rain in London

Between 11:00 Fri 13th and 20:00 Fri 13th There is the potential for heavy showers and thunderstorms during Friday.
What to expect
Some flooding of a few homes and businesses is likely, perhaps leading to some damage to buildings
There is a good chance driving conditions will at times be affected by spray and standing water, leading to some minor journey delays
Some short term loss of power and other services due to lightning strikes is possible
Delays to train services are possible
First thunderstorm warning for Croydon in 164 years, first ever for Manchester
https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weathewarnings#?date=2018-07-13&lat=51.5081&lon=-0.1248
HuffPo says "30mm in one hour possible" so it'll probably be light drizzle.
Edit: AT 14:40 it's hitting Basingstoke, Winchester, Andover and heading East.

2018.07.03 22:17 sovanbu MetroNet Update - Live August 1st

I live in the Andover subdivision in Hamburg. I just received a call from MetroNet a few minutes ago.
They're having a tech come out next week to install fiber from the tap (in my backyard which was completed in March) to my garage.
Then another tech will come out the first week of August to complete inside wiring and then service will be live!
I asked about other areas of town and the person on the phone couldn't specify their activation dates but he said this side of town will have a staggard activation. Other parts of Lexington are still planned to be finished by end of year.
Goodbye Spectrum!

  • Jimmy6Times: I'm pretty certain George Bush Sr. was a cheerleader. I can't imagine him doing this.
  • aarmoire: > Sr.
GHWB was actually as legit as they come. A definite old-school American.
Bush began his formal education at the Greenwich Country Day School in Greenwich. Beginning in 1938, he attended Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, where he held a number of leadership positions including president of the senior class, secretary of the student council, president of the community fund-raising group, a member of the editorial board of the school newspaper, and captain of both the varsity baseball and soccer teams.

Following the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941, Bush decided to join the US. Navy, so after graduating from Phillips Academy in 1942, he became a naval aviator at the age of 18. After completing the 10-month course, he was commissioned as an ensign in the United States Naval Reserve at Naval Air Station Corpus Christi on June 9, 1943, just three days before his 19th birthday, which made him the youngest naval aviator to that date.
I mean just look at his resume: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_H._W._Bush
It was Bush the Younger who coasted on his father's coattails and have-drinks-with-him charm.
Bush attended high school at Phillips Academy, a boarding school (then all-male) in Andover, Massachusetts, where he played baseball and was the head cheerleader during his senior year. He attended Yale University from 1964 to 1968, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history.

In May 1968, Bush was commissioned into the Texas Air National Guard. After two years of active-duty service while training, he was assigned to Houston, flying Convair F-102s with the 147th Reconnaissance Wing out of the Ellington Field Joint Reserve Base. Critics, including former Democratic National Committee Chairman Terry McAuliffe, have alleged that Bush was favorably treated due to his father's political standing as a member of the House of Representatives, citing his selection as a pilot despite his low pilot aptitude test scores and his irregular attendance. In June 2005, the United States Department of Defense released all the records of Bush's Texas Air National Guard service, which remain in its official archives.
In late 1972 and early 1973, he drilled with the 187th Fighter Wing of the Alabama Air National Guard. He had moved to Montgomery, Alabama, to work on the unsuccessful U.S. Senate campaign of Republican Winton M. Blount. In 1972, Bush was suspended from flying for failure to take a scheduled physical exam. He was honorably discharged from the Air Force Reserve on November 21, 1974.
How costly were those 530 votes in FL.
  • Gaming_Eelektross: Damn, HW was badass even in his high school years. And with his leadership in the Persian Gulf War, it's a shame he only had one term.
  • abnerjames: why did you say one when you meant three
  • causeWhyNotMate: cause why not, mate?

2015.10.01 13:23 MisterItcher [60 Teams in 60 Days] Merrimack College

Merrimack College (MC)
Hockey East Association (HEA)
Year Founded: 1947
Location: North Andover, MA (The campus straddles North Andover and Andover proper.)
Total Enrollment: Undergraduates: 2,900 Postgraduates: 400
Total Attendance: Total: 36,095, Average: 2,406, 94.4% capacity
Nickname Warriors. Informally, (the) Mack
Live Mascot: Mack the Warrior - not commonly seen these days. While the mascot and logo traditionally had been a Native American, in 2003 the school re-branded to a “Trojan-style” warrior.
Band: The Merrimack Pep Band.
Traditions As of the 2014-2015 season, the following were regular occurrences at the Lawler:
  • Goal song: Chelsea Dagger.
  • Second intermission chuck-a-puck contest
  • After a Merrimack goal is announced you will hear intermittent “wooing” from the student section.
  • After a penalty is assessed on an opposing player, WWE wrestler Kurt Angle’s theme music is played, with the fans adding “You Suck” in each off beat.
Arena: J Thom Lawler Arena
Opened in 1972, J Thom Lawler Arena is the home of the Merrimack Warriors ice hockey teams. The hockey arena is named for J. Thom Lawler, former coach of the men's hockey team who died in 1978 at age 44, just after leading the team to their national title.
The full athletic center is named for S. Peter Volpe, a member of the college's Board of Trustees and benefactor. His construction company was responsible for the building of the McQuaid Library on campus. His brother, John Volpe, was U.S. Secretary of Transportation under President Richard M. Nixon.
Over the summer and winter break of 2010, extensive renovation was done on the arena. The wooden bench seating was completely replaced with seatback chair seating and a student bleacher section was installed behind the visiting goalie's side. The "tin foil" insulation was removed from the roof as well.
Further renovations occurred in 2012-2013. Thanks to its partnership with the Middlesex Islanders Hockey Club, the Merrimack Athletic Department officially opened its second sheet, Gallant Arena, in late May of 2013. That fall, a brand new lobby opened on the more practical side of the building for entry, along with new bathrooms, concessions, a new space for the school bookstore/merchandise shop, Dunkin Donuts, and a hockey shop catering to the Islanders club and other rink tenants.
The Lawler has developed a reputation as a tough place for opponents to play. 2014-2015 attendance was 94.4% capacity, and fans are about as close to the action as you can get. The ice surface is also small relative to many HEA rinks. The surface is NHL regulation 200 by 85 with standard radius corners, but the attacking zones are 64 feet as opposed to the typical 60. See: [http://www.themackreport.com/news/debunking-a-lawler-arena-myth/]
Town Information:
Merrimack College is roughly 40 minutes north of Boston (depending on traffic) on the I-495 belt in the Merrimack Valley nearby the Merrimack River. Merrimack’s campus straddles exurban North Andover and Andover, MA at the intersection of routes 114 and 125. Andover Center, 5 minutes by car, hosts a commuter rail station and a number of restaurants and other businesses.
Tawny Andover is of course host as well to prestigious Phillips Academy. In stark contrast, bordering the Andovers is Lawrence, MA, a classic New England economically depressed post-industrial mill city. Lawrence was the childhood home of Robert Frost, of whom there is a statue on Merrimack's campus. Lawrence has a rich immigrant history which continues to this day, and is home of the New Balance factory.
First Seasons:
Merrimack first had an ice hockey team in 1956. They were successful in the late 1970s and early 1980s while playing in the ECAC division II. Merrimack won the Division II national title in 1978 and were the runner up in 1984. They became a Division I independent team in 1984 but did not play a schedule against predominantly Division I teams until they joined the Hockey East conference in 1989.
All-time Record:
  • Division I Hockey East: 321-522-89
  • Division I Independent: 126-45-5
  • Division II ECAC: 838-286-18
  • All-time: 830-853-112
Championships:
NCAA Division II National Champions, 1978
Frozen Four Appearances:
NCAA Division II - 1978, 1984
Tournament Appearances:
  • NCAA Division I - 1988, 2011
  • NCAA Division II - 1978, 1984
Rivals
UMass-Lowell
The "River Rivalry,” “I-495 Rivalry” or “978 Area Code Rivalry” is the geographical rivalry with Lowell approximately 15 miles away on I-495 (also nearby the mighty Merrimack River). In the 70’s and 80’s this was an extremely heated matchup, the details of which seem to be best captured in some Eagle Tribune articles (Blood, Sweat and Tennis Balls, Offspring of the Merrimack-Lowell Rivalry ) and on the UMass-Lowell River Hawks’ Wikipedia page:
During this time (the late 70’s into the 80’s) the rivalry with Merrimack was a more even match. The hate or one might say envy for the school in North Andover burned the same in (Lowell) Coach Riley.
“I was ranting and raving, he says. I got to the end of my vociferous dialogue and said, ‘I hate Merrimack. I hate their school. I hate the color of their uniforms. I hate the Indian chief on their shirts…‘I even hate their #$%@& zip code. I had just run out of things to hate, he says laughing. What you have to understand,” he adds with a straight face, “is that we had always looked up to Merrimack, so what I said, I said affectionately.”
The rivalry of course stalled out over the course of the late 90’s to 2000’s as Merrimack’s fortunes waned, but has regained steam as both programs have become competitive in Hockey East.
Boston College
Obviously, they have a target on their backs as the “class” of the conference and program with the most mainstream awareness in the Boston area. Years of humiliation at the hands of BC during the dark ages of the MC program fomented animosity. The great Merrimack team of 2011 suffered a heartbreaking loss to BC in the Hockey East Championship game, and has been consistently stimied in their efforts to win at the Conte Forum to this day. Add the rival Catholic school factor and Merrimack fans have plenty of reasons to dislike BC. While BC fans may consider these games to be a blip on the radar, MC fans relish the opportunity to challenge BC on a regular basis.
And the rest
It’s not terribly difficult to make a case for several of the other HEA teams as rivals. BU (also have a target on their backs), UNH (Geography), Maine (a frequent opponent in the HEA Playoffs), Providence/Notre Dame (fellow Catholic schools), etc.
2014-2015 Season
Record: 16-18-4 (7-16-3 HEA)
Coach: Mark Dennehy
Schedule
Big moments:
  • A stellar senior season by G Rasmus Tirronen, who set the save percentage record for the Warriors even in spite of a midseason injury.
  • Defeating Minnesota 3-2 in the opening game of the Marriucci Classic tournament in Minneapolis. Facing a 42-17 shot deficit, the Warriors gutted out their first win ever over the Gophers.
  • Upsetting Northeastern (then on an impressive hot streak) with a 2-game sweep in the first round of the HEA playoffs.
Season Summary
Rebuilding. Coming off a last-place finish in 2013-2014, the roster received a major overhaul with 10 freshmen. Although they played to a 10-5-2 record in the first half, the team was unable to post a W during the tough conference play stretch in February, leading to an 11th place finish. As mentioned above, Merrimack was able to sweep the Huskies in the opening round of the Hockey East playoffs to win a date with Boston University. Despite a disappointing finish at the hands of Jack Eichel and friends, we got an encouraging glimpse of MC’s future core players.
2015-2016 Season
Schedule
Drafted Players on Roster:
  • Chris LeBlanc (F, Jr) 2013 draft pick by OTT, 6th Round
  • Brett Seney (F, So) 2015 draft pick by NJ, 6th Round
Players to Watch
  • Brett Seney (F, So) After terrific rookie campaign in which he led the team in scoring, expectations will be high for the Devils prospect to provide the offensive spark for the team.
  • Colin Delia (G, So) Delia proved a capable backup to senior Rasmus Tirronen when called upon in the 2014-15 season. MC has produced a string of excellent goalies and Dennehy’s defense will start from the net out as usual.
  • Mathieu Foget (F, Fr) Foget comes in with a solid resume of scoring in the CCHL. Expectations are that he will be a speedy and creative playmaker similar to Seney.
  • Ethan Spaxman (D, Fr) Spaxman is described as a big, mobile defender who should be able to slide into MC’s veteran defensive core. At 6’4 196 lbs, he should have the potential to add strength, which suits the Warrior’s physical defensive play.
Merrimack’s History
Greatest Players:
Jim Vesey
Vesey scored 110 goals and 134 assists for 244 points in 140 career games from 1984-88. He captained the 1987-88 Warrior team that finished 34-6-0 and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey Tournament. That year, Merrimack upset Hockey East tournament champion Northeastern in the first round and went on to defeat Lake Superior in the first game of a two-game, total goals series, 4-3, before falling to the eventual NCAA champion Lakers in the series.
Vesey was a three-time All-American and received the College Division Hobey Baker Award in his senior year, when he led the team with 40 goals and 55 assists for 95 points. Merrimack won two consecutive ECAC East Championships in Vesey's junior and senior years, going a perfect 25-0-0 in his last season. (http://www.warriorhockey.org/vb/showthread.php?s=87e2631c152825a61ebacf6b36dcf583&postid=3300)
Jim Vesey is the father of current Harvard standout Jimmy Vesey.
Stephane Da Costa
Da Costa was born France. He moved to the US to develop his hockey skills and was recruited to join the Warriors for the 2009–10 season. In the second game of his freshman season, Da Costa scored five goals against Army. He finished the season with 16 goals and 45 points in 34 games. After the season, Da Costa won the National Rookie of the Year, USCHO Rookie of the Year, Inside College Hockey Rookie of the Year, College Hockey News Rookie of the Year and Hockey East Rookie of the Year honours.
After receiving numerous offers from NHL teams to sign as a free agent, Da Costa opted to return to Merrimack for a second season in 2010–11. He once again led the team in scoring with 14 goals and 45 points in 33 games, missing multiple games in February due to a knee injury.
Joe Cannata
A native of nearby Wakefield, MA, Cannata attended Boston College High School and represented the USA with the national U-18 team prior to arriving at Merrimack in 2008. In his four years with the school, he developed into one of the elite goaltenders of the NCAA, backstopping the 2010-2011 tournament team and the (briefly) nationally #1-ranked team in 2011-2012.
Greatest Coaches:
J Thom Lawler
  • Head Coach 1965-1978
  • Record: 218-138-10 (NCAA Division II).
Lawler, a Merrimack Hall of Fame member, coached the Warriors for 13 seasons from the 1965-1978, until his sudden death at the age of 44. Lawler compiled a 218-138-10 record at Merrimack. Lawler’s .609 winning percentage remains the best in the history of Merrimack hockey. Lawler coached the Warriors to the program’s only National Championship in 1978 and also guided them to three championships in the prestigious ECAC while making 11 playoff appearances. Lawler’s teams made the playoffs in all but one year while he was at the helm, and besides winning the ECAC titles, his team was national runner-up four times.
Lawler died suddenly at the age of 44 on Sunday, June 11, 1978, only months after leading the Warriors to their only national title. Lawler’s son, Thom, was a freshman on that team and went on to become captain in the 1980-81 season. Then vice-president of development Bob Hatem had this to say about Coach Lawler: "Thom Lawler did something with the small school athletic program which brought us national attention. I think the man truly represented what sports are supposed to do." Mike Reynolds, a player under Lawler added, "He helped me as a hockey player and as a person. I put 100 percent because I loved the man. He was great."
Lawler, who was a veteran of the Korean War, was a native of Rome, N.Y., and a 1960 graduate of St. Lawrence University. At St. Lawrence, he participated in two national championship games as a member of the hockey team and was named MVP of the baseball team.
Mark Dennehy
  • Head Coach 2005-present
  • Merrimack Record: 128-187-43
The 2009-10 and 2010-11 All-New England Coach of the Year, Mark Dennehy enters his 11th season behind the bench of the Merrimack men's ice hockey team in 2015-16.
In his near decade on campus, Dennehy has completely rebuilt the brand of Warrior Hockey, elevating the program from a former cellar dweller into a Hockey East conference power year in and year out. He holds an overall record of 131-215-46, which includes one season as the head coach of Fairfield University before his arrival in North Andover.
In his most recent season, Dennehy led a team that was comprised of 10 freshmen to an eight-win improvement from the previous season. Merrimack soared out of the gate, posting a 10-5-2 record in its first 17 games to account for the team's best record at the end of the first half since 2011-12. With 10 wins in 15 tries, Dennehy also led Merrimack to its second-quickest start to a 10-win season since joining Hockey East in 1989-90.

Ron Anderson
  • Head Coach: 1983-1998
  • Merrimack Record: 255-249-24
A native of Moncton, New Brunswick, Anderson spent 18 years on the coaching staff of Merrimack College, including 15 as Head Coach (1983-98), where he won three consecutive ECAC championships and achieved an undefeated season in 1987-88. He is currently a part of the Chicago Blackhawks organization.
"I have to give Ron Anderson, our coach, a lot of credit in building this team. He was one of the smartest people I had ever met in hockey. He was great at getting talent, too. In fact, he still is as a scout for the Chicago Blackhawks. He is a special guy. I will always thank him for what he did for me and Merrimack." - Jim Vesey

School History
From the school’s website:
Merrimack College was founded in 1947 in North Andover, Massachusetts, by the Order of St. Augustine O.S.A.
“The Augustinians, at the invitation of Richard Cushing, then Archbishop of Boston, established the College as a direct response to the needs and aspirations of local G.I.’s returning home from World War II.
Merrimack College is a tribute to the man who, more than anyone else, made it all possible, the Reverend Vincent A. McQuade. A native Lawrencian, Reverend McQuade, led the College to eventually become a showcase of the Merrimack Valley, approximately 25 miles north of Boston.
Since that time, the now 220-acre Merrimack College has graduated nearly 22,000 students; has grown to nearly 40 buildings including a 125,000-volume library; four classroom buildings; including the Gregor Johann Mendel, O.S.A., Science, Engineering and Technology Center; the 130,000-square-foot Sakowich Campus Center; the Rogers Center for the Arts; the S. Peter Volpe Athletic Center; Austin Hall, which houses administrative offices; the Collegiate Church of Christ the Teacher; student apartment buildings, townhouses and residence halls; and the Louis H. Hamel Health Center. Students at Merrimack College now come from all across the United States and around the globe.
TL; DR: The college was founded in 1947 to educate GI’s. It was mainly a commuter school until the 90’s when the administration began the process of building new dorms and student life facilities. Into the 2000’s and today, it became a primarily residential liberal arts college featuring a wide array of degrees and postgraduate offerings.
The hockey program suffered several setbacks at the end of the 90’s into the 2000’s. Neglect to the program and facilities by the administration, student and alumni base made demotion to Division II a serious possibility for several years. Merrimack also developed its reputation for fielding a much older average team than most of the elite HEA programs during this time. Luckily, under the guidance of head coach Mark Dennehy, new college administrative leadership and alumni interests, the hockey program was able to make a remarkable turnaround culminating in a return to the Hockey East playoffs, the 2011 NCAA tournament run, and a brief stint in the #1 national ranking.
Local Dining:
Routes 114 and 125 host a number of strip malls for your chain dining needs such as the 99 Restaurant, Burton’s Grill, Bertucci’s and Fuddrucker’s burgers. Andover Center is a couple miles away and has local dining options as well. (Grassfields for an excellent sit-down meal, Palmer’s has live music, Park Street Pub is your closest cash-only dive.)
A few nearby Merrimack local institutions include the legendary Harrison’s Roast Beef (the best roast beef in the Merrimack Valley), Jimmy’s Culpeppers Bar and Grill with its fine selection of craft beer, and The Claddagh, an Irish bar up 114 in Lawrence with plenty of TV’s, bar games and live music.
On campus at the Sakowich Student Center is Augie’s Pub, a school-run bar featuring plentiful popcorn and very reasonably priced beer for the Mack faithful. It opens late, at around 8PM making it a good postgame option.
Random Trivia:
  • Merrimack has the smallest enrollment of any D-I ice hockey program.
  • The Warriors have an outdated reputation for recruiting older players, but in fact are mid-pack with an average age of 21 years, 7 months.
  • The senior apartment complex at Merrimack consists of buildings lettered A thru M, but there is no “I Tower.”
  • Merrimack hockey participated in the Team IMPACT program, a non-profit organization that matches children facing life-threatening illnesses with college athletic teams and listed Tim Burke on their roster as he battled leukemia. Further information here.
Academics
Merrimack is a liberal-arts college offering more than 90 majors. The most popular majors at Merrimack College include: Business, Management, Marketing, and Related Support Services; Family and Consumer Sciences/Human Sciences; Health Professions and Related Programs; Engineering; and Social Sciences.
Notable Alumni:
  • Charlie Day (Actor, Charlie from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) is a 1998 alum of Merrimack. You can see his 2014 commencement address here.
  • Carl Yastrzemski (Hall of Fame MLB Left Fielder) received a degree from Merrimack in 1966.
What is and what is to come
Hockey-wise, nobody has any concerns about Dennehy’s ability to guide the program, there is a solid core of talent after last year’s roster overhaul, and excitement only continues to build for the program. The hope is that Dennehy does not leave the program to take the helm of his alma mater BC in the event that Jerry York decides he’s had enough.
The school is also abuzz for this year’s debut of the women’s ice hockey team, also playing in Hockey East in Division I.
Longer term, the vision is to compete in Division I in all sports. This has been in discussion for several years now but would require the sponsorship of an appropriate conference and significant upgrades to facilities.
Campus-wide, new buildings (residential and academic, as well as athletics upgrades) have been brought online annually for the past several years now and there is certainly a lot of optimism around the school as a whole. Here is a great article about how the current leadership at Merrimack has gone about creating positive momentum for the college.

2012.07.28 02:43 AndovCR This isn't the answer I'm looking for....

I recently submitted a ticket:
Hi,
Was wondering if you could clarify something for me. Does either Headgear of Dark Delirium or Boots of Dark Delirium still drop in Mandalorian Raiders flashpoint? I know they used to be in Beta, and just want to complete my set. I've run it close to 30 times now with my friend, and I know that is by no means an exhaustive search, just don't want to waste my time if it has been confirmed that they have been removed.
Thanks much, Andov
This was the response I got:

Rob, of all the recurring memes that have existed on /. over the years, which do/did you find most irritating? And why? 'First Post' was actually really irritating to me, because there would be a dozen or more of them on many articles. This made the REAL discussion a significant hunk of scroll away to read.
A number of users wrote bots designed to get the First Post, which created a lot of unnecessary load on our servers in an era when we were pretty starved for resources.
We solved that for a few years by writing a script that posted an automatic 'First Post' to stories before readers actually saw it. And then a few minutes later, we would remove the robot created post.
This worked for awhile, but then readers started noticing comments were disappearing, and the system was explicitly designed to never delete a comment... but by then the 'First Post' game had died down, and the moderation system became highly effective at sending them down to Score:-1 almost immediately.
I apologize for my bot. :( And I apologize for mine.
I find it strangely ironic that the creator of the internet problem -and subsequently, the meme of being "slashdotted" would ultimately gripe about users causing excessive server load. I assure you the irony was not lost on me at the time either!
Can you elaborate on Slashdot's (or your) relationship to Kuro5hin in the early days? Were you guys aware of similar, but other-language projects like the now-defunct symlink.ch? I was sad because so much of Kuro5hin in the early days was built around hostility towards Slashdot. I had no problem with someone building a competitor- but didn't have to be so venomous. I remember symlink, but not very strongly. I wish Slashdot the best- I still think that the editorial guys are finding a number of good stories per day. A casual tech person can still use it as a good Cliff Notes of the tech space.
I always chose the side of the users. Okay Tron. Badge of Honor ;)
Consequently siding with the users sometimes seems to be "old-fashioned" nowadays. But if it's old-fashioned, so be it. :-) The Slashdot I built was the brainchild of an idealistic 20 something in the 90s. If those ideals are old fashioned, I'm fine with that.
Thank you for Slashdot. I've used it for over a decade now to keep up with tech news & laws. I'm fine with your 20something self's ideals and what it gave us. Again, many many thanks. :) I appreciate it.
Teach them. I'll teach them the words... but I don't think they'll ever understand what those words meant to me, or to a few thousand other nerds.
True... though someday, they very well could be saying the same thing about their kids. I wonder about stuff like that with my own. Thanks for Slashdot, by the way, from uid 1016017 (though I'm more than just a number). :-) We're all just numbers... albeit very large ones counting in DNA base pairs.
post! Remember that I had run Slashdot for 14 years. I had watched countless corp re-orgs. Numerous executives coming and going. And what felt like a perennial round of layoffs. I had been ready to leave for a few years, but I had a couple of kids and didn't want to be job hunting with a pregnant wife.
EDIT: On a more serious note, if you wouldn't mind me asking, first of all, why did you leave /.? A year before i left, several of my friends were let go (including Jeff "Hemos" Bates) in a particularly brutal round of layoffs. For a time, Slashdot had a single engineer (the long suffering Tim Vroom!). I stayed, fearful that new hands would end the site.
, did you ever expect it to get so big when creating it? But what became clear is that I was ultimately damaged by the last year. I wasn't happy doing the work any more. Management and I had a different vision for what Slashdot was meant to be: I'm not saying that their version of the site was BAD, but it really wasn't the site I had been trying to run for all these years.
Finally, what OS is your favourite? (because I suppose I should include at least one tech related question) I grew increasingly cynical and unhappy. And finally I wasn't able to hide it any more. It was time.
Can you talk a bit more about being purchased by VALinux (or whatever they were called back then), what it was like immediately after and how that feeling changed? We were originally purchased by Andover.net, and I honestly didn't feel anything significant change for awhile. They served the ads, we produced the site. Over time they increasingly helped with engineering, HR, ops etc. It was pretty ideal. It wasn't until a couple years later where things started changing.
(I have some friends over at another sister property who have interesting feelings about it and I wonder how they line up with yours) I'd love to hear other people's stories. Feel free to have your friends ping me. Unless they are the ThinkGeek folks. They have cooties.
The site's really gone downhill since you left, Rob. I mean, we both know it was on it's way out for a while, but if you let the WaPo guys run /. mini on some spare dev hardware, even if it's slow, I know more than a couple of us would follow you there. If GeekNet offered to sell it to me for $1, I'd consider it... but I imagine they think it is worth far more! I'm not working on anything directly that you can see. But little bits and pieces of my work is trickling out. I'm sure the Labs guys have their own opinions, but I'd like to think I've had some small influence on the plans for the Washington Post Social Reader for example.
Since Slashdot is open sourced in Slashcode, couldn't you start your own brand new Slashdot? With blackjack and hookers. In fact, forget the site! Excellent. Lets cut straight to the good stuff!
Why aren't you user #0? Fun Trivia: Anonymous Coward is actually user #666!
I always knew that guy was an asshole. Really prolific too. In the early days of the site, I actually DID get emails from people who thought he was one person.
Have you revised your opinion of the iPod since 2001? I stand by the fact that the original iPod sucked. Then they fixed it.
What were the big changes in your mind? (I.e., what made it go from "suck" -> "fixed"?) Windows Support, replacing the mechanical wheel with the static one, the original iTunes was really a mess, and the iTunes Store. Also making it just a few gigs bigger let me fit my entire library. That helped too ;)
2 questions -- Hemos works at Google.
What are Hemos, Kurt 'The Pope', and Cowboy Neil doing these days? Kurt the Pope works for Sight Machine (a Machine Vision company I have invested in, also founded by Nate Oostendorp, who I guess was Slashdot's third engineer).
Favorite moment at Slashdot? CowboyNeal recently contributed a game review to Slashdot- his first editorial work in several years. I hope to see more of him in the future.
PS: "Nuke The Moon" was my favorite Geeks in Space episode. You guys should start that back up! Someone start a Kickstarter to get Geeks in Space back ;)
I still have all my GiS mp3's on a flash drive... I still listen when I'm feeling nostalgic. I think it took me over a year to accept that whole "we'll start back up if/when we can figure out the remote logistics" thing was never gonna happen :'-( I imagine I could talk Hemos & Nate into doing it if there was a reason to... but we're all amazingly busy. Nate has a startup. Jeff travels back and forth across this country every other week. And I am working plenty hard at the post. Getting 3 people in a room for 90 minutes a week is tricky when you're as mobile as we are. The funny thing is that now that podcasting and home studio recording is so easy, we could do it now for virtually nothing. It's just a matter of scheduling.
+1 for a GiS kickstarter... Seriously, if someone worked out the logistics/funding, would you really "get the band back together?"
I really miss Geeks in Space. It was hilarious and entertaining and I remember looking daily for new episodes for at least a year after they stopped being made. I loved making them. Just straight up fun.
Heh, yeah... Well, if you all ever have the time and inclination... your audience is still here, eagerly awaiting the Black Mesa of podcasts ;) Unfortunately I suspect that audience numbers in the hundreds, so I don't see there being profit in it... and my ego is inflated enough!
Maybe just get the old crew back occasionally to Skype in to an established podcast? For example, take over the panel on TWiT once and a while. I imagine we could make that happen sometime, but it's just not a priority in any of our lives.
When, in your opinion, was slashdot's peak / highest moment? The day I proposed to my wife on the front page.
What do you feel is the biggest threat to user submitted content on the Internet? Companies valuing money over users? People who abuse the system for their own personal gains (either self promoting or just trying to be the class clown), moderators who are undervalued or have infighting, or users who are just insensitive to preserving a culture or a lack of appreciation for a free service. Or sometime else? Communities tend to cycle: as they grow, commercial interests try to shape it. Reddit might be the exception: they've held closely to a minimalist aesthetic and avoided commercial influence. But their success has rendered the homepage pretty mediocre. THe sub-reddits are where the action is. So to a certain extend, Reddit's greatest success was containing the chaos in one giant swimming pool, and letting the cool kids hide just barely out of site.
What are your favorite subs on Reddit? I don't subscribe to any of them in particular, but when I constantly see interesting things from IAMA and Science.
Why did you found the GNAA and can you tell us anything about the inner workings of this incredible organization? Ok, so I said AMA... but I guess I lied. You can't handle this one.
Emacs or vi ? Vim.
As a proponent of online privacy you posted many stories on /. around the increased data collection by large companies, and what this could mean for consumers or normal people. How do you see a company like Google using the data it collects, and specifically your interest in Google+? Data is just data. When I ran Slashdot, I logged everything I practically could because without it, I couldn't make informed decisions.
What corporations DO with that data will pretty much define the future of the internet. I don't think people truly understand the implications.
The biggest databases- things like Facebook and Google could be used in so many awful ways. But I collected all the data I possibly could too, and I really tried to impress upon everyone I worked with the RESPONSIBILITY that this data entails. Like, just because you gave me your email address is not permission for me to sell it or spam you.
I hope that the giants play nicely. I want the cool shiny things they make... and I'll give them the benefit of the doubt in most cases.
It seems to me it would enhance their brand value to be seen as trustworthy. Do you think that will influence them to be better internet citizens with the data they retain? I think they all know the value of their respective brands. The question is where will they draw the line?
Question: which BSD distributions, if any, has Netcraft confirmed are dying? All of the BSDs are the dying.
question: which type of hot breakfast cereal would you most like to pour over a statue of actress Natalie Portman? All of the portmans are gritted.
Rob! All I have to say is thank you for the countless hours i spent on on /. trying to keep up with all tech based problems, and some of the satirical things as well. Do you think you will create a similar web-site and take a different approach? If there was one thing you could change with /. what would it be? Slashdot was owned by GeekNet, which is a publicly traded company with fiduciary obligations, and a CEO beholden to a board and shareholders. I always made my opinions clear, and worked with them in mind. But I could be over-ruled. I always fought for what I believed in. If anything, I probably fought to hard since it really affected me at a personal level. I still like the approach of the original Slashdot: no bullshit. honesty. disclosure. personal. I don't see a need to build a website to continue that tradition today... you can follow me on G+ as +Rob Malda and on twitter as @cmdrtaco and on Link to cmdrtaco.ne and get the same general stuff from me without all the overhead.
I feel you started a great tradition in the IT World. Coffee, Boot up Computer, Open up Slashdot. It is my morning routine. So thank you, and Godspeed, sir! Speaking of which, my cup has been empty for almost an hour. This shall not stand! This will be the last question I answer until my cup is refilled.
Quick! Get this man some coffee! He needs a warm delicious beverage in his hand! We can't lose him! I'm back. Americano in cup. And an apple gripped in my teeth like I'm a pig ready to be roasted.
How's your wife? I remember the day you proposed. I hope she's doing well. She's upstairs chasing our kids while I furiously chat with internet strangers.
Do you miss the days of running the site from an alpha in your bedroom? I truthfully do miss the old days (although the Alpha technically never lived in my bedroom! It was under my desk at my employers... serving double duty as an SMTP/Web Server). I will never again work that hard- from the moment I woke up until the moment I fell asleep. And it was ultimately amazingly satisfying interacting with so many cool people. Many of whom I still see on Google+ +Rob Malda and on twitter @cmdrtaco so join them!
Did you just plug google+? I love G+. And anyone who doubts it should follow me. I share good links, and get interesting discussions. Twitter is just to fragmented for my tastes. It works, but it's just not directed enough.
G+ is largely a ghost town, but I have a few thousand followers that actually have something to say. I'm not Robert Scoble or Justin Bieber, so I get to have meaingful feedback and discussion. I love G+. Seriously.
2) Why do u think it lost out to other sites? 1) I really miss posting stories and reading cool discussions that we generated.
3) How much money did u make on it? 2) We lost for a number of reasons- but mostly I think it comes down to having a working machine that couldn't easily change. Reddit & Digg both brought new ideas to the space, and Slashdot couldn't simply change into those sites without changing what IT was. You dance with the date who brought you.
3) Enough to take a lot of time off if I need it. Not enough to put my kids through college and retire.
Can you describe for us the moment when you realized that Slashdot was no longer a pet project, but something legitimately successful? What was the moment, and what did it feel like to know that your venture was actually going to, well... work? There were several moments- very high on the list was a few months in when we ran a poll question asking 'How many shots should Kurt Drink?' (Kurt was our roommate, and eventually the Blockstackers hlegal guy). The poll had hundreds of votes within a few hours.
Do you have any ideological commitment to free and open source software, or do you only care that it's a UNIX? I think I somewhat addressed this elsewhere, but for me it's more practical than ideological: the deeper into the system you go, the more open it should be. The more components that depend on a sub-system, the more open it should be.
This is necessary to make it possible for us to hack out the next generation, and to prevent us from all getting locked into crap.
Any new languages, operating systems, or advancements in hardware you think someone who was into tweaking OS source code, overdriving their own 486 cpu's, and other primitive hacking around could get into as a new hobby? I'm going to learn this for myself in the next few years as my sons become old enough to start learning to take stuff apart, and put it back together again... but better.
As slashdot went from a pet project to something owned by a corporation, what was the hardest decision you had to make? Quitting was harder than selling it. I really hoped that i could work there forever. The sale of the site was really structured to make that possible. But 14 years changed me, GeekNet, and Slashdot in unexpected ways.
So you were forced to quit? No. I chose to quit because I knew that I couldn't maintain the site in a way that I would be proud of.
Now you know how the rest of us felt for all those years :p. There are a lot of things like this that I learned in the year since I left. It's different on the outside.
What was the best/worst "survey/poll" you ever posted? Also, where did you/the site get the ideas? You mean polls? I don't think I could name a favorite. We did so many fun ones- we voted on who should be naked at Tradeshows. How many shots we should drink at parties. And so many CowboyNeals.
Do you still use slashdot as a user? I primarily only read Slashdot now as an RSS feed. When I use the site natively, I start mentally making a list of things that need to be fixed or changed. And then I get a bit grumpy that I can't do anything about it.
Who came up with the /.-joke-name? The joke name was mine. I actually had a desktop that I named 'slashdot' back in the dorm rooms a couple years before I registered the DNS. And if ICANN approves the .DOT TLD, I better damn well get dibs on slashdot.dot so I can have Link to slashdot.org as my homepage!
I think you mean Link to slashdot.dot - awesome :D. I wish I had a mirror of Chips & Dips... I'd put it there ;)
Longtime /. reader and huge fan here. Slashdot was news for NERDS. That term still hasn't been as usurped as "Geek" which I think has been pretty devalued.
Do you feel like the spread of the web in the last 20 years, from something just for nerdy computer types, and into the mainstream world has had a negative effect specifically on sites/forums for the truly geeky, like /.? For example, 15 years ago "geek" was an insult that was probably the pre-cursor to a locker room wedgie, where now "geek" has become something cool that even people who aren't remotely geeky refer to themselves as. Is the rise of "Fake Geekiness" having a negative effect on real nerd culture, and making it more difficult for hives of true nerdiness to thrive these days? The thing that made me sad was that Slashdot was meant for a very tiny group of people... unfortunately, that group of people was almost entirely already online in the late 90s. As the internet grew, our user base remained roughly the same!
As a long time attendee of many a *nix convention, I was always surprised when they had some 'Slashdot Lounge', which more or less seemed to be +/- you and some others on a couch, chatting, while being watched by any number of gawkers. What truly was the point of that, and did it feel as awkward as it looked to me or was it all a laugh and I missed the point? It was incredibly awkward, and almost totally meaningless.
To be fair, it was nice to have a place to hang out and read email and chat with a few friends. Conferences are kinda boring otherwise.
Mostly tho, it seemed to me that we did these just to show advertisers that we were legit, and that we had lots of readers.
For me, I got a lot of really good feedback from people. I learned what people like, and what they didn't. When people hate you, they write you angry email. WHen they like you, they don't say anything. So we'd get a lot of honest information from people who just happened to walk by and recognize our logo.
But hells yes, it was awkward. I'm an introvert. After hour 3 I just wanted to hide in a cave.
Why did you sell /.? At some point, it became clear that we needed 100x the hardware and bandwidth and many more employees to run things smoothly. The choice was to finance ourselves, or find a company that had infrastructure to help us scale.
Why did you choose the latter over the former? (Selling rather than financing yourselves.) It seemed easier at the time: Find a company that already had an HR department, already had racks of servers, already had a few hundred megabits of bandwidth and a couple of sysadmins and some ad sales guys.
I was really interested in building SLASHDOT, but I wasn't all that interested in building the support infrastructure necessary to hold it. What did I know about hiring a corp attorney? Ya, know?
What do you think are the strengths of /. vs the strengths of Reddit? Slashdot lags slower, but maintains a more consistent tone. You can read 25 Slashdot stories and get a good grasp of the world. Or you can read hundreds of Reddit articles, get mostly the same information, but it would require substantially more effort to weed through the noise.
I still have to read 300-500 headlines per day to find the dozen stories I think are worth reading each day. So far, no site has achieved that for me. I live in Google Reader.
I noticed Reddit seems to have more problem than /. these days. It's also a couple orders of magnitude larger, so that would make sense.
I think you made a Dreamhost shared server admin cry. And I'd never seen a system with a load average of over 250 before. Thankfully, the guys at Geekalize (now sadly defunct) stepped in and gave me a place to stay for a bit. I live in east michigan right now- and the Jolly Pumpkin shared our wall for a year or two. That was super sweet.
2) I know you're from West Michigan. What's your favorite local microbrewery? Usually when I'm back in west michigan, it's to bring the kids to visit grandmas and grandpas... so I'm probably to busy to drink your beers!
(God, so many more questions! Like, 'which version of D&D to you prefer, and have you tried Pathfinder and GURPS?') I prefer D&D 3.0 to later versions. I don't care for gurps or 4.0.
This was the design I am talking about, Link to images.slashdot.org. I was still in highschool when I was wearing that all the time, I'm kind of shocked I didn't get in trouble for it looking back. I love that design. My copy of that shirt is still in my big plastic tub. Someday I'll wear it again. Or at least show it to my kids before the big bonfire.
What would you do differently, if you could do it all over again? I think if I had just one thing, I would tell myself to quit after OMG Ponies. That would have been a great high note to leave on.
I've never been a big fan of the internet's pension for lame April fools jokes. But OMG Ponies had me laughing all day (and still sometimes to this day). April Fools Day was usually one of my favorite days of the year. I used to get all this hate mail from people who would scream that the jokes weren't funny... to me, that BECAME the joke!
Did you ever get complaints about the slashdot effect? Constantly, ranging from legal threats to the more bemused and thankful.
Do you still get them? ;) I actually get fairly frequent complaint emails from Slashdot users either unaware that I left, or indifferent to that minor detail.
Heh. Do you still reply? Or do you have an automated e-mail reply/response for those? I reply to as much email as I possibly can. I don't have any auto replies any more.
Can you talk about leaving a successful website that your vision helped create. Was it painful, did you want to leave, or were you forced out? I had to leave. It hurt more than I could ever explain. It ripped my guts to do it. But I wasn't happy any more. I no longer could see a future for the site I wanted to run. And it was eating me up inside. Eventually it ate right through and spilled back out.
My friends knew it. My wife knew it. I'm glad I left before my kids knew it too. I know that not everyone gets to work in a job they love... but nobody should work a job that actually makes them emotionally hurt. And by the end, that was where I was.
I was never able to separate "Slashdot" from "Rob". Quitting was the only way.
I wasn't forced out. I could have stayed. But it would have cost me other things.
1) How often are you (CmdrTaco) a victim to name squatting and how do you deal with it? If I try to register on a system that has been around for awhile, it's very likely taken. If I care (Twitter, Reddit) I can usually find a sympathetic admin to help me (Thanks Erik!). Else I just register something else and grumble.
2) Who has been the most prolific submitter to slashdot over the years? Link to slashdot.org has the list of the top submitters, so RTFM I guess ;) the leader is currently theodp.
How's your bit with the Washington Post working out? It's been really great. I work with a bunch of really smart people, and on interesting problems. And more than just tech, there's a giant newsroom filled with passionate journalists who obsess with so many of the same things that I always did.
That's awesome. When I heard news of your departure I was kind of excited to see where you would land... did not expect it to be at a newspaper. I will say that I've enjoyed the stories you've written so far and am looking forward to more great content. Finding a home where I would have the opportunity to write was important to me. I had other options, but this just felt right. But if you had told me that I would land at a newspaper 5 years ago, I would have laughed.
What circumstances led to the current incarnation of the moderation and metamoderation systems on slashdot? What led to some of the design decisions (5 points to hand out, etc.)? Someday I should probably write out the evolution of our mod system just so people understand why I made the design decisions I did. Basically we started with friends, and expanded the circle slowly. Eventually the circle got big enough that we couldn't trust everyone. I also learned that people get bored and squander or ignore their powers.
We tweaked most numbers in the system pretty extensively over the years. Even that 5 mod point number was subject to experiment. Some users got more!
I for one would be interested in reading that. I always wondered why sometimes I got 15 points. Because you deserved them.
So what happens now if two people squander a point on a comment ranked as a 4? Separately, what led to the first and second site style changes? I loved all three looks (not sure how many there were; I am an 800,000-ID user, so I still came in during the site's younger-middle ages), but I take it that a compelling reason presented itself for changing the site aesthetic? See this is a classic case of someone not thinking about the big picture: Sure, that happens. Yup, it's annoying. But how often is it ACTUALLY an issue? Score:4 comments are relatively rare. Mod points are rare. The act of modding a 4 to a 5 is VERY rare. So the system loses what, 1% of mod points to this terrible tragedy? The system used to lose 50% of mod points on weekends to people not reading on SUNDAY. BIG PICTURE! See it!
The second design was just because it was time to make some space on the page for some new features, and to modernize things a bit. The third design was done because people who were paid a lot of money were convinced that it was the right thing to do. I wasn't one of those people. I was more of the if-it-ain't-broke mindset. TONS of effort went into countless versions. I was just happy that the new version wasn't hugely worse than the old one. There were some versions that were just awful.
I always did try to take moderation seriously. But: How did you determine that in an automated fashion? The whole moderation system and the thought processes behind it were always fascinating to me. The meta moderation system blindly showed random moderation acts to people and got their opinions. Comments that deviated from tolerances could be acted upon, and the busted moderators removed. It worked remarkably well for many years.
